FAMILY HISTORY
Generation 1 (starting person)
John William Stein: John was born Waterloo, Ia Dec 1, 1882. He married Emma Nancy (Ayers) Reems Dickinson, ND, Jun 24, 1908. At 26 years of age John became the father of George Clarence Joseph Stein Dickinson, ND, Jun 4, 1909. At 28 years of age John became the father of Laurence John Stein Oakdale, ND, Jan 26, 1911. At 30 years of age John became the father of Glenn Presley Stein Oakdale, ND, Dec 12, 1912. At 33 years of age John became the father of Lyle Samuel Stein Killdeer, ND, May 29, 1916. At 33 years of age John became the father of Lynn Simon Stein Killdeer, ND, May 29, 1916. At 37 years of age John became the father of Lucille Etta Stein Oakdale, Nd, Feb 3, 1920. John died Mar 9, 1965 Vancouver, Clark Co., Wa, at 82 years of age. His body was interred Mar 13, 1965 Vancouver, Clark Co., Wa, Evergreen Memorial Gardens. John was of the 2nd generation born in America. He never knew his grandfather, John Stein who was the immigrant. His mother Elizabeth died when John was 17, and his grandfather Conrad Funk died when he was 25. John and Emma were married in Dickinson, North Dakota. They had one child who died in infancy, Clarice who was born in 1914, between Glenn and the twins Lyle and Lynn. They moved from Killdeer North Dakota to the Pacific Northwest in 1935, first settleing in Camas Washington and then moved on to Vancouver, Washington. They arrived in Portland, Oregon at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon on November 4th and crossed the Columbia River into Vancouver. The population of Portland at the time was 33,000 and Vancouver had 16,000 residents. For a period of time tended the rose gardens in the Janzen Beach Amusement Park on Hayden Island located between Vancouver and Portland. Raised beef cattle with son, Lyle on his farm. Also saw fit to have geese and turkeys at times. He always grew a large garden with at least 1/2 acre of corn and had pear, apple, plum, filbert and walnut trees. Loved to spend time in the pasture, in his large red barn or garage, and on farm equipment helping friends and neighbors bailing hay. Had a homemade tractor, but owned commercial farm implements. As he grew older he developed a noticable limp from an knee injury sustained a number of years before. From the grandkids point of view, a kinder old gentlemen would never be found. He always had time for family and spoke fondly of his family in the Dakota's and in Iowa. Always had a grin on his face and never complained. Late in life had a full head of curly gray/black hair. Enjoyed meals that included mashed potatoes, corn, and always some sort of meat. He also liked watching boxing and wrestling on television while eating a bowl of popcorn. Was known to have had a beer or two at times. He and Emma celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at The Covington House in Vancouver Washington. He was severally burned on his farm early in 1965 and lived about 2 weeks before dying in the Memorial Hospital, in Vancouver, Washington, at the age of 82. He was truely a remarkable, careing, and wonderful man

Generation 2 (parents)
George Conrad Stein: George was born Carroll Co., Il Jul 30, 1857. He married Elizabeth Funk Blackhawk Co, Ia, Nov 1, 1881. At 25 years of age George became the father of John William Stein Waterloo, Ia, Dec 1, 1882. At 26 years of age George became the father of Kate Gertrude Stein Waterloo, Ia, Oct 27, 1883. At 27 years of age George became the father of William Henry Stein Waterloo, Ia, Jan 3, 1885. At 31 years of age George became the father of Henry George Stein Waterloo, Ia, Jul 27, 1889. At 34 years of age George became the father of Anna Elizabeth Stein Waterloo, Ia, Dec 28, 1891. At 36 years of age George became the father of Charles Andrew Robert Stein Fenton, Ia, Feb 14, 1894. At 42 years of age George became the father of Lillian Georgia Stein Anoka, Minnesota, Oct 23, 1899. At 47 years of age George became the father of Donald Stein Anoka, Minnesota, May 14, 1905. George died Oct 26, 1925 Stratford, SD, at 68 years of age.
Elizabeth Funk: Elizabeth was born Fremont, Carroll Co, Il Oct 25, 1858. She married George Conrad Stein Blackhawk Co, Ia, Nov 1, 1881. At 24 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of John William Stein Waterloo, Ia, Dec 1, 1882. At 25 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Kate Gertrude Stein Waterloo, Ia, Oct 27, 1883. At 26 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of William Henry Stein Waterloo, Ia, Jan 3, 1885. At 30 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Henry George Stein Waterloo, Ia, Jul 27, 1889. At 33 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Anna Elizabeth Stein Waterloo, Ia, Dec 28, 1891. At 35 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Charles Andrew Robert Stein Fenton, Ia, Feb 14, 1894. At 38 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Louis Albert Stein Fenton, Ia, Nov 19, 1896 (had son Walter Allen born July 1, 1934 who had a son Larry Arden born May 29, 1964). At 40 years of age Elizabeth became the mother of Lillian Georgia Stein Anoka, Minnesota, Oct 23, 1899. Elizabeth died Aug 4, 1900 Osage (Finton), Ia, at 41 years of age. There are records for Elizabeth showing her mothers last name to be spelled "PETERS". The spelling shown on this record is from the marriage certificate of Conrad and Anna Elizabeth (Petern). On the marriage certificate from Blackhawk County Iowa Elizabeths name is listed as Lizzie. Elizabeth died of Cancer. Her death certificate uses the name Eliza Stein.

Generation 3 (grandparents)
John Conrad Stein: He married Gertrude Catherine Steele. John was born Waiblingen, Neckar, Wurttemberg, Germany 1827/28. John immigrated, May 17, 1854. Destination: passenger number 37. At 29 years of age John became the father of George Conrad Stein Carroll Co., Il, Jul 30, 1857. At 32 years of age John became the father of Mary Susan Stein Dekalb, Il, Oct 30, 1860. At 34 years of age John became the father of Kate Stein Carroll Co. Il., Mar 12, 1863. John died Mar 16, 1865 Jefferson Township, at 36 years of age. The Stein family immigrant came to America leaving Antwerp, Netherland into the Port of New York on May 17, 1854. Listed as passenger number 37 (steerage) and a 26 year old farmer from Prussa. This would put his birth into years 1827 or 1828. Records on the tombstone states the birth year as 1831. Ship was the Bremen Bark Amaranth. Antwerp the Netherlands is now Belguim. Prussia: A former state in North Germany disolved in March 1947, who's capital was Berlin. Bark: Small 3 masted sailing vessel. Amaranth: Purplish red flowers with showy colored foliage. Bremen: Small state in Northwest Germany situated on the Weser River. His death on March 16, 1865 according to family lore was a result of a logging accident thought to have been in Illinois, however he is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson Township Iowa. His widowed wife Gertrude married a John Adams on October 4, 1865, her married name in state records at the time was spelled Stine. Research is continueing but this time little more is known of the immigrant.
Gertrude Catherine Steele: Her body was interred Bennington Township, Blackhawk Co., Pioneer Cemetery. She married John Conrad Stein. Gertrude was born Probably Germany 1831. At 26 years of age Gertrude became the mother of George Conrad Stein Carroll Co., Il, Jul 30, 1857. At 29 years of age Gertrude became the mother of Mary Susan Stein Dekalb, Il, Oct 30, 1860. At 31 years of age Gertrude became the mother of Kate Stein Carroll Co. Il., Mar 12, 1863. She married John Adams Oct 4, 1865. At 36 years of age Gertrude became the mother of Amelia Adams 1867. At 38 years of age Gertrude became the mother of John M. Adams 1869. At 40 years of age Gertrude became the mother of Georgiana Adams 1870/71. Gertrude died Dec 1919 at 88 years of age. Referred to in family lore as: Grandma Gerty. Some records show her name as Gertrude Catherine while other show the name as Katherine Gertrude. In her will she names herself, Gertrand. There are variations in the spelling of the last name, they are Stehl and Steel. The marriage license for her second marriage to John Adams she listed the spelling of Stein as Stine. Her death certificate shows that she died from exhaustion following fracture of the hip. In a census record she lists her immigration year as 1857 and since George was born in July 1857, she would have been pregnant when immigrating to the U.S.. John came in 1854. If that fact is true and Georges true father as listed on his birth certificate is John, then John Stein and Gertrude Steel probably married in Germany and came separately to the U.S.
Conrad Funk: Conrad died Jul 26, 1907 Blackhawk Co., Iowa. Conrad was born Waiblingen, Neckar, Wurttemberg, Germany Jun 27, 1828. He married Anna Catharine Peters Carroll Co., IL, Feb 24, 1854. At 26 years of age Conrad became the father of John Funk Aug 14, 1854. At 27 years of age Conrad became the father of Henry Funk Aug 25, 1855. At 30 years of age Conrad became the father of Elizabeth Funk Fremont, Carroll Co, Il, Oct 25, 1858. At 31 years of age Conrad became the father of William Funk Carroll Co., Il, Feb 14, 1860. At 33 years of age Conrad became the father of Katheryn Funk Feb 15, 1862. At 37 years of age Conrad became the father of Conrad Funk Lanack, Il, 1865. At 38 years of age Conrad became the father of George Funk Lanack, Ill, Sep 13, 1866. 1870 Census of Carroll County, Illinois (top of page 192, toll 191) shows him as a white male farmer aged 42 and born in Germany. He was a resident of Rock Creek Township. 1870 Cenus also shows 7 children: from John at 14 to George at the age of two. Illinois Domain Land Tract records show he purchased 40 acres of land in Carroll Co on May 1, 1869
Anna Catharine Peters: Her body was interred BenningtonTownship, Pioneer Cemetery. Anna was born Waiblingen, Neckar, Wurttemberg, Germany Feb 25, 1827. She married Conrad Funk Carroll Co., IL, Feb 24, 1854. At 27 years of age Anna became the mother of John Funk Aug 14, 1854. At 28 years of age Anna became the mother of Henry Funk Aug 25, 1855. At 31 years of age Anna became the mother of Elizabeth Funk Fremont, Carroll Co, Il, Oct 25, 1858. At 32 years of age Anna became the mother of William Funk Carroll Co., Il, Feb 14, 1860. At 34 years of age Anna became the mother of Katheryn Funk Feb 15, 1862. At 38 years of age Anna became the mother of Conrad Funk Lanack, Il, 1865. At 39 years of age Anna became the mother of George Funk Lanack, Ill, Sep 13, 1866. Anna died May 7, 1908 Blackhawk Co., Iowa, at 81 years of age. Some confusion about the last name, be it Peters or Petern based on Illinois Marriage records. State records have it as Peters with Petern in par's. Family records and lore have the last name as Peters. It is believed that she had a sister named Elizabeth, and at least two brothers who's names were George and Henry. Peters are believed to have immigrated from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany.

I'd also like to know if you have any information on Kate Gertrude Stein. I can remember my grandfather taking about his sister Kate but I don't know anything about her.

My grandfather is Donald David Stein (born 1905) son of George Conrad Stein if I am following the line correctly. When George Conrad Stein's wife passed away in 1900, my understandig is that he remarried (hence my grandfather born in 1905). I do not see a record of this marriage/wife. Do you have any informaiton on the woman that should be my great great grandmother? I know VERY LITTLE history on this the maternal side of my family. Would love to get more information, etc. You can find me on facebook as Rhonda Folker McCullough
